Research programs requirements

 

 

Those rules were approved and modified in Center’s council on December the 8th 2010, January 11th 2012, February 2nd 2012 and on October 24th 2012.

 

Section 1: Duration of studies

 

Item 1: Time limits

-The Master degree requirements must be completed in 1 to 4 academic years.

-The Doctorate degree requirements must be completed in 2 to 7 academic years.

 

Section 2: Credits

 

Item 1: Requirements for graduations

-Master students registered during the academic years 2004-2005 to 2006-2007 must complete 32 credits. Master students registered from the academic year 2007-2008 and after must complete 28 credits.

-Doctorate students must complete 28 credits.

 

Item 2: Class selection Limits  

-During their complete Master1 and the first semester of Master 2, the student can attend from 6 to 12 credits only.

 

Item 3: Required Credits per semester

-Master students registered during academic years 2004-2005 to 2006-2007 must attend at least register 7 credits per semester. Master students registered from academic year 2007-2008 and after must at least register 6 credits per semester.

-Doctorate student must at least register 4 credits per semester.

 

Item4: Knowledge groups and selection of classes

- To establish strong bases of knowledge and provide a good level of practice in all key skills, the programs of this center are divided into three knowledge groups. To the exclusion of required classes, students are requested to select classes from those three groups. The students are thus required to complete:

-4 to 8 credits in the domain of Methods and Theories in History

-4 to 10 credits in the domain of History of East Asia and General World History.

-8 to 12 credits in classes centered on their specialization.

The registration of students from Master and Doctorate programs according to knowledge groups shall be announced by the office of the department.

 

Item 5: Rules regarding selection of classes out of this Center or NCCU.

-The students may follow classes out of the center or out of NCCU and make them count in their program completion. Those classes may not exceed a third of the total credits for Doctorate students and a quarter of the total for Master students.

-The approval of the director of research or of one of the advisors is required before including an external class in the program.

-Classes eligible to be added to the program are those given by National Taiwan University, National Taiwan Normal University, National Tsinghua University or any other institution in or out of Taiwan with which this center possesses academic collaboration agreements.

-The teachings credited during exchanges are to be counted according to NCCU’s rule governing such matters.

 

Item 6:

-Doctorate students who are Master graduate from this center may not attend identical classes as the ones they already completed during their master(s) program.

 

Item 7: Supplementary credits

-Students holding a master degree in History or equivalent domain excluded, the Doctorate students are required to take 6 credits of master compulsory classes. Those are not considered part of the credit count.

-Students holding a bachelor degree in History or equivalent excluded, the Master students are required to take 4 supplementary credits in “Taiwan and the modern world”. Those are not considered part of the credit count.

 

Item 8: Exemption of credits

-Students holding a Master degree in History or equivalent domain excluded, the Doctorate students who are required to present the compulsory class of Master degree can request to be exempted of those classes. They must then present proof of having followed equivalent teachings during their former degree(s).

-Students holding a bachelor degree in History or equivalent excluded, the Master students who are required to present the “Taiwan and the modern world” class can request to be exempted of this class. They must then present proof of having followed equivalent teaching during their former degree(s).

-The final decision on exemption lies with the center’s council and an audit of the office of academic affairs.

 

Section 3: Second foreign language

 

Item 1:

-The Doctorate students of this center must pass this center Higher level certification in Japanese or present a High level certification in any other second foreign language.

 

Item 2:

-Foreign students are requested to present a proof of Higher intermediate proficiency in at least another language than their mother language and Chinese. (Mandarin) before they present their thesis. 

(Each language must be presented by a separate proof.) 

 

Section 4: Academic activity

 

Item 1:

-Doctorate students must publish at least one article in a recognized Periodical before their graduation and present a proof as certification.

(Ie: Copy of the Publication + Publication agreement)

 

Item 2 :

-To encourage students to strive to publish their research, Master and Doctorate students that will have published an article will be preferred for research scholarships attribution.

 

Item3:

-To encourage students to participate in academic activities, Master and Doctorate students that will have published an article or participated in a conference will be preferred for research scholarships attribution.

 

Section 5 : Directors

 

Item 1:

-In principle, Master and Doctorate students are to select their Research Director among the teaching staff of this department, be it hired Part- or Full-time.

 

Item 2:

-Master students desiring to select a person external to this center’s teaching personal must submit an application and a justification letter and submit them to the Center council for review and deliberation.

 

Item3

-Doctorate students desiring to select a person external to this center’s teaching personal must find a joint advisor among the teaching personal of this center, submit an application and a justification letter and submit them to the center’s council for review and deliberation.

 

Section 6 : Qualification examinations

 

Item 1:

-Master students must present an examination over two of the four following periods of Taiwan history before presenting their thesis. (Early Colonization/ Dutch, Spanish, Zheng/Ming Kingdom ; Qing Dynasty ; Japanese Colonization ; After the second world war (KMT dictatorship and recent times))

-Master students desiring to present this examination can and must announce it to the center’s office up to the second week after the beginning of each semester.

-Qualification examinations for master students are held every semester, one week after the end of the mid-term examination period.

 

Item 2:

-Doctorate student must present an examination on their thesis subject(s) and short time context period, divided into one exam on the short time period centered around their thesis subject and two examinations on specific periods.

-The Director will propose a list of committee members for the supervision of the qualification examination, there must at least be one qualified person unrelated to this research center amongst the examination reviewers.

-The time for each subject examination is defined as one day (some time in between AM9:00 to PM5:00). A candidate can choose to present two subjects in one day.

-The department must provide the examinee with a computer to answer if he so desires. The examinee may not take his work information and study books inside the examination room, nor can he/she access the internet.

-Doctorate student desiring to present the examination must present their application before April the 15th and October the 10th of every year. The examination process must be completed by the end of the semester.

Item 3:

-Master and Doctorate students must have a grade of at least 70/100 to pass the qualification exam.

 

Section 7 : Presentation of the Thesis

 

Item1:

-In addition to the director, at least two professors must attend the presentation of a Master thesis; amongst them at least one must not be a member of NCCU.

 

Item2:

-Before the presentation of their thesis, Doctorate student must publish and present its subject.

-On the day of the presentation of the subject, in addition to the director, at least two professors must attend; at least one of them must not be a member of NCCU.

-On the day of the presentation of the thesis, in addition to the director, there must be an examination committee of at least four members, two or more amongst them not being member of NCCU.

 

Section 8: Others

 

Item 1:

-Once they have completed all the credit requirements, passed the qualification examination and presented their Master Thesis, the Master students graduate and receive the title of Master in History of Taiwan.

 

Item 2:

- Once they have completed all the credit requirements of this center and passed the qualification examinations, the doctorate students become Doctorate Candidates in History of Taiwan.

- Once they have completed all the credit requirements, passed the qualification examinations, passed the Japanese or other foreign languages appropriate test, have presented their subject successfully, have published at least one article in a recognized publication and presented their Doctorate Thesis, the Doctorate candidates graduate and receive the title of Philosophical Doctor in History of Taiwan.

 

Item 3:

-Those requirements and rules apply to all student of this center.

 

Item 4:

-The rules regarding the Knowledge groups as written in Section 2 item 4 went in application from academic year 2011 on.

-The rules regarding the supplementary credits as written in Section 2 item 7 went in application form academic year 2012 on and apply retroactively.

-The rules regarding Second foreign languages applicable for doctorate students, local or foreign, as written in section 3 Item 1 and 2, went in application from academic year 2012 on and apply retroactively.  

-A new set of rules which render the classes “Selected readings in Japanese on Taiwan History” and “Selected reading in English on Taiwan History” compulsory for Master students will be in application from the onset of academic year 2013.
